The short answer
Draft Coach is a Turnitin add-on for students. It runs similarity, citation and grammar checks while you write in Google Docs or Word on the web. It depends on your school’s Turnitin licence, and school administrators must enable it. You cannot buy it yourself. If it is not in your add-ons, ask your library or instructor.
What it does
| Check | What Turnitin says |
|---|---|
| Similarity | Compares your draft with web pages, papers submitted to Turnitin, and periodicals, journals and publications. |
| Citations | Flags missing references and citations in MLA and APA styles. |
| Grammar | Highlights grammar errors, with explanations. |
See Turnitin’s product page. Turnitin sets no target score. It says your school or instructor may set one. For how to read the number, see Turnitin similarity score.

How to get it
- Check that your school has it. Turnitin’s student page says it is for Turnitin Feedback Studio and Turnitin Originality customers. The Google listing says the same licence is required.
- Look in your add-ons. It works in Google Docs or Word online. Turnitin’s FAQ says it does not work in desktop Word, and that the school’s administrator chooses one of the two platforms.
- Use your school account. Administrators must enable it first.
- If you cannot find it, ask. Your library or IT help desk can tell you if it is on.
Limits
- Similarity checks. Turnitin’s statistics page says three per document, so save them for later drafts.
- Citation and grammar checks. Unlimited per document, per Turnitin’s help pages. The grammar report covers the first 100,000 characters of a long document.
- Citation styles. The student page names MLA and APA.
Turnitin’s pages on these limits are older, so confirm them with your school.
Is your draft stored?
Turnitin’s FAQ says drafts are not sent to its repository or your school’s repository, so a draft will not match your final submission. It also says results cannot be shared with your instructor from Draft Coach. We read this on 6 October 2026.
If your school does not have it
Turnitin’s help centre says it does not sell individual licences. So you have these options:
- Ask your instructor. Some allow a draft submission before the deadline.
- Use a separate checker. Our Google Docs add-on and plagiarism checker find text that matches other sources, with a link to each. The first check is free up to 1,000 words, and a free account includes 3,000 words a month. It cannot search Turnitin’s student papers or predict a Turnitin score.
- Avoid sites that sell Turnitin reports. Turnitin says it does not sell individual access, so such offers are not official.
