Does Google Docs Have a Plagiarism Checker?

Short answer

Google Docs™ doesn’t include a general plagiarism checker. Google Classroom offers originality reports for assignments on some Google Workspace for Education accounts, but that’s a Classroom feature tied to assignments — not a tool in Docs itself. To check any Google Doc, use a plagiarism-checker add-on, or paste the text into an online checker.

Google Classroom originality reports

If your school uses Google Classroom, a teacher may be able to turn on originality reports for an assignment, which compare submitted work against web pages and, depending on the school’s edition, past submissions. What’s available — and how many reports you can run — depends on your school’s Google Workspace for Education edition and settings. Ask your teacher or school, or see Google’s Classroom help for details.

Outside a Classroom assignment — a personal document, a work report, an article or a thesis draft — there’s no built-in check in Docs.

Check a Google Doc with the add-on

Install the add-on from Extensions › Add-ons › Get add-ons in Google Docs.
Open the document and choose Extensions › Plagiarism Checker Plus › Check this document.
Sign in (a free account is required), tick Plagiarism, and optionally exclude quoted text and your reference list.
Click Check document, then review the matching sources and click a match to jump to it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Docs check for plagiarism automatically?

No. Google Docs doesn’t scan documents for plagiarism. Originality reports exist in Google Classroom for some Workspace for Education accounts, and add-ons can add a check to Docs.

Can I check only part of a Google Doc?

Yes. With the Plagiarism Checker Plus add-on, select the text, choose Selection in the sidebar and click Check selection. It needs at least 50 words.

Can the Chrome™ extension check Google Docs?

The extension’s in-page buttons don’t run on docs.google.com. Use the Google Docs add-on to check a document in place.
